Cold mornings in Hillcrest Village are hard on tired brass, and a key that has been bending for years finally lets go inside the lock. We remove the snapped piece without harming the cylinder, look at why it failed, and cut a fresh key from the code or the remaining half before we leave.

Smart locks, keypads and fobs are only worth fitting to doors in Hillcrest Village that are mechanically sound. So we check alignment and the bore first, install the hardware, then sit with you while codes are set and a phone is paired. Every electronic lock we fit keeps a mechanical key as a backup, and you leave knowing how to use both.

What we can sort out

Lock work in Hillcrest Village is rarely just one thing. A lockout often reveals a worn cylinder; a rekey is a good moment to fix a strike that never lined up. The services below are described one at a time, but a locksmith at your door will happily point out anything else worth doing while he is there.

2021 census · what it means at the door

  • 58%Older homes

About 58% of homes in Toronto were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.

Layers of paint build up on older doors and frames, and a lock that seemed to fail is sometimes a latch glued shut by the last coat. Part of the visit in an older area is freeing hardware, cleaning the edges and checking the door swings true.

  • 23%

Single-detached houses make up about 23% of homes in Toronto (2021 Census).

Townhouse rows often share a keyway chosen by the builder. A locksmith can move a household onto a keyway of its own so a neighbour's key, or a key from the construction phase, no longer has any chance of fitting.

Let's clear a few things up

My key snapped off in the lock. Is that still a lockout call?

It starts the same way and adds one step. The broken blade is removed with extraction tools that grip it and draw it out, rather than pushing it deeper, and then the door is opened normally. A key rarely breaks in a healthy cylinder, so the locksmith checks the pins and springs afterwards and cleans or services the cylinder if wear caused it. A new key is cut from the two halves or from the code, since a weakened copy would snap again.

Do you need my spare key?

It helps if there is one. A crisp spare is the ideal pattern for the replacement, better than the broken halves and far better than a worn copy. It also lets the locksmith test the cylinder the moment the fragment is out, which shows whether the pins and springs are sound. If the spare is itself bent or worn, mention that too; it is a candidate for retirement rather than a pattern.

Is a smart lock a good replacement after a break-in?

It can be, with the same reinforcement behind it. A keypad or app-controlled deadbolt eases the problem of stolen keys, since codes are changed in seconds and a lost phone is unpaired rather than rekeyed. Its bolt still needs a boxed strike and long screws, because the frame is what failed; a keyed override should be rekeyed too, with any spare left with a trusted person, not hidden outside; a cylinder-free model needs no override key. Choose one with a full-throw bolt and fit it to a reinforced door edge.

Who is allowed to ask for a rekey on a shared building entry?

Because a shared entry serves more than one household, the locksmith looks for someone with authority over the whole door: an owner, a landlord, a property manager or a condo board, rather than any single resident acting alone. An individual tenant can usually request work on their own unit's door without issue, but changing the lock everyone in the building relies on to get in is treated as a decision for whoever manages the property, with current residents given new keys once it is done.

Can you install a safe I already bought somewhere else?

Yes. Bringing your own unit is common, and the installation itself does not depend on where the safe came from. The locksmith still needs to check its weight, its footprint, and its anchor points against the floor or wall it will sit on, and looks over the lock before calling the job complete, since a new-to-you safe occasionally arrives with a stiff mechanism or a combination still set from the factory.
