Straight answers about locks

We would rather you knew enough to make a good decision than rely on us to make it for you. The short articles here explain how locks work, what wears them out, and which small habits keep your doors, keys and cars trouble-free for longer.

Should I rekey my locks after being locked out?

It depends entirely on where the key is. If it was inside the house the whole time, your locks are exactly as secure as they were yesterday and nothing needs changing. If the key was lost or stolen, rekeying is the sensible follow-up, because it retires that key for good while keeping your existing hardware. Lock manufacturers give a lost or stolen key as one of the main reasons to rekey, and doing it during the same visit saves a second call. Home Lockout Service

My key turns all the way but the door stays locked. What has failed?

Usually the link between the cylinder and the bolt. On a storefront lock the cam behind the mortise cylinder can wear or slip out of position; on a lever or mortise lockset the tailpiece or a spring in the deadlatch gives up. Your key is fine and so are the pins, so once the door is opened the fix is a new cam, tailpiece or latch, and your existing keys carry on working. Business Lockout Service

Can the piece be pushed out from the other side?

On a standard door cylinder the keyway is closed at the back by the plug and the tailpiece, so there is no straight path through. What a locksmith can do is remove the cylinder, take off the cap, and push the plug out of its housing with a follower, which frees the fragment from behind. That is done on the bench, not by forcing anything from the inside of the door. Broken Key Extraction

I rent. Who arranges the repair, and can I change the lock myself?

Tell your landlord or property manager as soon as the police have been called; provincial tenancy law makes the landlord responsible for repairs to the unit, and most will arrange the locksmith. A tenant may not change locks without the landlord's agreement, and a landlord who changes them must give the tenant keys, so the visit is coordinated between you. If you arrange securing yourself in an emergency, keep the receipt and the record of what was done for both sides. Break-In Damage Lock Repair

Change or Rekey Locks

What exactly does rekeying a lock change?

What changes depends on the cylinder. Many locks turn when a row of small bottom pins lines up at a precise level, set by the cuts on your key, and during a rekey the locksmith tips those pins out and loads a set that lines up with a different key, cut new for you; some residential cylinders instead reset a side-locking bar without removing any pins. From then on the new key operates the lock and older keys do not, and the hardware on the door stays as it was. Lock Rekeying

How long does a deadbolt installation take?

A replacement into existing holes is generally the shorter visit, and boring a fresh door with a new strike takes longer, roughly an hour or two per door including the frame work and testing. Steel doors, keying alike, frame repairs after a forced entry and fitting a jamb reinforcer each add time. The locksmith can give a realistic estimate once the door and frame have been looked at. Deadbolt Installation

What does a higher grade of lock actually give me?

Grades follow ANSI/BHMA standards, with Grade 1 the highest and Grade 3 the lightest, and residential hardware carries a separate label that scores security, durability and finish. The grade reports how the lock performed on the standard's own operational, strength and security tests; a higher grade often comes with a longer bolt, a sturdier housing, pins that resist picking and a strike built to anchor into the framing, but those features are worth confirming on the specific model rather than assumed from the grade alone. Lock Replacement & Upgrade

Can a modern cylinder be fitted to my old mortise lock?

Often, on cases that already take a threaded cylinder. Mortise cylinders are made in standard thread sizes and lengths with different cam shapes, and a new one is selected to match the case and the door thickness. That gives you keys cut on a machine and the option of keying the door alike with the rest of the house. A bit-key case has no cylinder to swap; its keys are made on the bench instead. When does a locksmith decide to drill a safe instead of opening it another way?

Drilling is chosen when the gentler options for that specific lock, manipulation and decoding on a mechanical dial, or a manufacturer reset or override on an electronic one, are unavailable or have not worked, rather than following one fixed order on every safe. It is also the answer when the lock has genuinely failed, such as a seized wheel pack or a dead circuit board with no working override. The decision is explained before drilling starts, not discovered afterward. Safe Opening & Combination Change

What does a typical installation or servicing visit involve?

The visit opens with a look at what the safe needs to protect and where it will sit, moves into positioning and anchoring for a new unit or bolt-work and lock testing for an existing one, and ends with the lock cycled several times and a combination or code set that only the owner knows. The exact order shifts depending on whether the job is a new installation or ongoing servicing. Safe Installation & Servicing

Will the new cylinder fit my existing locks?

Usually. High security cylinders are made in the common formats: key-in-knob and lever, rim, mortise and interchangeable core, and many are designed to drop into popular residential and commercial locks. The locksmith identifies your format and confirms fit before ordering. Where a lock is an odd size or in poor shape, a matching lock body is fitted instead, and the door preparation is reused wherever it is standard. High Security Locks

How often should a business change its keys as a matter of routine?

There is no fixed interval. Rekey on events rather than on a calendar: a key not returned, a lease change, a break-in, a renovation crew finished, or a key count that no longer matches the register. Businesses with a good register and a restricted keyway often go years between rekeys because nothing prompts one. A yearly check of the register against the keys on the hook is the habit that tells you when the time has come. Commercial Rekeying

Can a master key system be expanded later without redesigning it?

Usually yes, if spare capacity was planned into the keying platform from the start. A new hire is normally handed a copy of the bitting their role already calls for, and a realistic new door can be pinned to accept a combination already reserved for that purpose. A system pinned to its absolute limit on day one has less room to grow, and adding a level to existing doors later can mean repinning cylinders that are already in daily use. Master Key System Design

Can access control be added to just one door, or does it have to cover the whole building?

A single door with its own standalone reader is a complete installation on its own, and plenty of businesses start there. If more doors need controlling later, a networked controller can be added at that point, or the building can simply add another standalone unit. Nothing about starting small commits the business to expanding, and nothing about a single-door job rules out growing the system later. Access Control Installation

Can a padlock or extra deadbolt stay on a door that has this hardware?

No additional fastening should stay on an exit door that does not release the same way the primary device does. A hasp, padlock or separate deadbolt added at some point for extra security is a common finding on an older door, and removing or replacing it with something that releases under the same push is part of bringing that opening back to a single, reliable exit. Car Keys

The whole car is dead, not just the fob. Can you still open it?

Yes. When the interior lights, horn and remote are all silent, the car's own twelve-volt battery has run flat, and the fob has nothing to talk to. The door is opened through the mechanical cylinder or with a wedge and reach tool; loose or corroded connections and other faults can look the same as a dead battery, so it is checked and confirmed safe before a jump pack brings the car back to life. If the battery will not hold a charge, you will know before the locksmith leaves. Car Lockout Service

Are there vehicles where the dealer has to be involved?

A few. Some manufacturers lock key programming behind data or tooling that only their dealer network can run, particularly on the newest models and on certain all-keys-lost situations. The locksmith checks your VIN against what the equipment supports before the visit and tells you plainly if the dealer route applies. Even then, the locksmith can often cut the emergency blade, open the car and handle the mechanical side so the dealer step is a small one. Car Key Replacement

What testing happens before I leave with the new key?

Every door lock, the trunk or hatch, the ignition or start button, and any remote functions are checked with the new key on its own, apart from the original, so neither key is quietly helped along by the other's signal. The vehicle is started more than once to rule out an intermittent issue, and only once both keys pass independently is the visit considered finished. Spare Car Key Duplication

What happens if every fob for my car is lost at once?

On many vehicles the key memory has to be reset before any new fob can be added, since nothing already accepted remains to authorize one; some vehicles instead accept an authenticated app or manufacturer service credential without a full reset. Where a reset is needed, it may take a security code specific to your vehicle or an approved access pathway built for exactly this situation. Once the reset completes, a full new set of fobs is registered and tested before the visit ends. Key Fob Programming
